Supra Oracle by Uusi
I can’t speak about this deck without also mentioning Pagan Otherworlds Tarot.
Like Pagan Otherworlds, this is is a beautifully designed and produced deck from the Uusi creative studio, except this one is illustrated by Peter Dunham (who hand-penned the script on Pagan Otherworlds Tarot) and the guidebook is written by Linnea Gits (who painted the Pagan Otherworlds Tarot).
The two decks very much feel like a bonded pair (lovers? best friends? siblings? something else equally close?). They just complete each other’s sentences in a way that would be hard to replicate if you replaced one of them with something else.
The hand-penned artwork is stunning. I’d love to know what nib and ink Peter orignally used to complete the drawings, but I’m a sucker for that sort of thing.
And like Pagan Otherworlds, the card stock and linen finish are impeccable, making this deck an absolute dream to shuffle — if you’ve ever touched the Playful Heart Tarot or Marea Tarot, these give a very similar tactile experience. So springy and thin! Delightful. I guess card-based divination and reflection is as much about the sensory experience for me as it is the messages I get from the cards themselves.
Uusi describes the Supra Oracle as loosely based on Jungian psychology and how it mingles with Gnosticism. It captures a melding of physics, psyche, and ancient knowledge in Jung's practice that inspired an artistic leap at the dawn of the 20th Century in how Man relates to the world around him. It was a soul-making process in an era of growing preoccupation with the Machine and a return to our mystic roots that nourish and enliven our essential selves – our identities – within the immeasurable expanse of the cosmos. "With a world very much in play, and running at a machine's pace, we need objects and practices that ask us to stop, reflect, and allow us time to be human – to listen to what is in our hearts as much as what is in our minds."
Like Pagan Otherworlds Tarot, the Supra Oracle does not come with a guidebook. Instead, it’s book is available for purchase separately — called Supra The Hidden Path of an Oracle — and is a beautiful standalone book in its own right.
